“A city that finds beauty in small things will be sure to show a concern for beauty in big things,” city councillor Guillaume Lavoie said last week during Projet Montréal’s pitch for more creative manhole covers.
City council voted unanimously Monday night to adopt the official opposition party’s motion calling for a distinctive new design for sewer lids in conjunction with Montreal’s 375th birthday in 2017.
Already seen worldwide in cities like Berlin, Calgary, Toronto, Seattle and Miami, Projet Montréal argued it was time for the city to slowly rid itself of its boring, utilitarian covers and replace them with a distinctive, Montreal-inspired design.
The city replaces 700 to 800 manhole covers a year as part of its regular maintenance.
