The leader of Coalition Avenir Québec wants young Quebecers to attend school from the age of four to 18.

François Legault made the statement Sunday as part of the symposium Objectif réussite Québec, which was organized by Chambly MNA and CAQ education spokesman Jean-François Roberge.

During the event, held at the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières, Legault proposed to make kindergarten available to all children in the province at the age of four.

He also suggested making education compulsory to the age of 18.

Legault said he believes that both measures — whose costs are estimated at $400 million over five years — will reduce the dropout rate and increase the success rate among youth.

He also assured that the CAQ will make education its top priority for the general election in 2018. It’s a view shared by Roberge, who has just launched a book titled Et si on réinventait l’école? (What If We Reinvented School?)

Legault and Roberge have said that Quebec has lagged far behind in education.

The conference’s goal was to stimulate a constructive debate to improve the education system in Quebec.
