About 80 people in Laval are still not allowed into their homes Wednesday morning after a major water-main break Tuesday caused sewage to back up in to basements.
Laval police spokesperson Franco Di Genova said that about 36 homes were affected in the Vimont district and that the residents are not being allowed home because of health concerns.
The water that gushed from the 16-inch pipe when construction crews accidentally struck it overloaded the sewage system, forcing black water into the homes. The broken water pipe has been repaired.
They will not be allowed back until their homes have been cleaned and disinfected, Di Genova said.
As of 7:45 a.m. on Wednesday, the access ramp to des Laurentides N. off Highway 440 remains closed.
Construction crews are building a sound barrier wall in the area.
