Police are investigating after someone scribbled the words: “John Rennie massacre shooting. Killem all,” on the back of a seat of a city bus.
Montreal police Constable Abdullah Emran said police have knowledge about a conflict that broke out between John Rennie students and those from neighbouring Félix Leclerc high school, which is part of the French-language Marguerite Bourgeoys School Board.
“We know there was a conflict, where students from one school wanted to go to the other school, but we don’t have detailed information about it,” Emran said. “We also know there was a metal bar involved. Maybe one of the students was carrying it.”
Emran would not say whether there was a physical altercation or just an argument that broke out between the two groups of students. However, after the initial conflict broke out, the graffiti was discovered.
“We opened up an investigation,” Emran said, adding that police are taking the message seriously. “We also posted patrols in front of both schools to assure the public.”
He said police will try to contact the teens involved in the dispute.
Emran said if the perpetrator is found, he or she could face charges of public mischief and uttering threats.
Classes are on as usual in John Rennie on Friday, but the school principal sent a message to parents Thursday to explain what measures have been taken.
This afternoon, the Montreal Police Department (SPVM) informed us of an incident where graffiti had been scribbled on the back of a seat of a public bus. The graffiti made reference to John Rennie High School. The matter is presently under investigation by the SPVM.
At this time, there is no reason to believe that the safety of students or staff is in any way compromised. Classes will be held tomorrow as usual. However, as a precautionary measure, and in an effort to reassure parents and students, the Montreal Police will be present during the entire school day. The Lester B. Pearson School Board will also have added security.
Rest assured that we are taking the necessary steps to ensure the safety of all students and staff.
