Several blocks along Ropery St. in Point St. Charles have been evacuated following an explosion this afternoon inside a Canada Post truck.
According to the Montreal police, a Canada Post employee had just delivered a package to a home around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday and was returning to his vehicle when he heard an explosion.
No one was injured but police evacuated the area from Centre St. to Châteauguay St., and set up a safety perimeter stretching from Charlevoix to La Prairie, and from Grand Trunk to Centre.
“Firefighters are on the scene and the police are waiting for the SWAT team to neutralize the truck and make sure there is nothing else that could explode inside,” said Constable Benoît Boisselle. “All hypotheses will be studied. It could be just a battery that exploded but we won’t take any chances.”
Police bomb experts did not find any explosive material in the truck.
Residents were allowed back in their homes during the evening as police continued to open packages.
