Quebec standup comedian Mike Ward wants to offer financial support to the satirical website Le Journal de Mourréal in the event that they would be engaged in legal action against Média QMI and Québecor Media.
On his Facebook page, Ward wrote that he was ready to offer the proceeds from a show on freedom of expression slated for October to pay any legal fees.
He argues that not everyone can afford to take a stand.
On July 7, the owner of Le Journal de Montréal, Média QMI, filed an injunction in the hope of ending the activities of the satirical website, which has been operating for almost four years. The website lampoons Le Journal de Montréal’s site.
On its Facebook page last week, Le Journal de Mourréal started a crowdfunding campaign to fight the media giant.
On Sunday, Le Journal de Mourréal announced it would be shutting down rather than engage in a costly legal battle. But early Tuesday the site acknowledged Ward’s offer and suggested its fight isn’t over.
