Montreal city workers worked most of the day to repair a water main that broke about 9:30 a.m. on Van Horne Ave. just west of St-Laurent Blvd.
The break of a 16-inch pipe dating to 1907 caused major flooding in the underpass of St-Laurent Blvd., which also has a bicycle path used by hundreds of cyclists each day.
Michel Tanguay, a spokesperson for the Plateau-Mont-Royal borough said the water was pumped away throughout the morning and reopened to cars in mid-afternoon. Crews hoped to reopen the bike path by the evening.
Water was cut off to about 10 buildings in the area as crews conduct repairs. Westbound Van Horne was closed to traffic at St-Laurent Blvd. That street abuts several industrial buildings, and is not used by many cars, Tanguay said.
