A fire in a Ville-Marie condo forced 30 people to evacuate Saturday morning.
Three people, including one firefighter were treated for minor injuries on site, said Urgences Santé. The fire at 1231 Wolfe St. broke out around 9:45 a.m., according to authorities.
The fire is believed to have been started by a barbecue on the building’s rooftop terrasse and spread to a neighbouring roof, according to Danny Ciavaglia from the Montreal fire department.
Witnesses reported that there is a possibility that the fire originated in a flower pot — a result of either spontaneous combustion, or the disposal of a “smoking article” in the dirt, Ciavaglia said. Officials have not confirmed where the fire originated yet.
The fire was put out before noon, Ciavaglia said, but investigators do not know the extent of the damage or when residents can return home.
About 100 firefighters were at the scene, though first responders were able to control the blaze quickly.
Several residents were treated on-scene for minor injuries, and no one was transported to hospital, Ciavaglia said.
Because of the extreme heat warning in effect in Montreal, Ciavaglia explained that the blaze was classified as a four-alarm fire, and could have continued to spread rapidly if firefighters had not responded in time.
Police were also on scene to redirect traffic around the scene between René-Levesque Blvd. and Ste-Catherine St., Montreal police said.
