A late-term pregnant pedestrian in her twenties died on Wednesday after being hit by a car in Quebec City, while crossing Laurier Blvd. on a crosswalk near the Centre hospitalier de l’Université Laval around 10:15 a.m.
A spokesman for the Quebec City police department, Marie-Ève Painchaud, said the young woman died of her wounds in hospital. The child has been born and is in stable condition, under medical surveillance.
The vehicle continued driving after hitting the woman, before finally being stopped by two other vehicles who were stopped in traffic at Germain-des-Prés Ave. The two vehicles were damaged — one of the occupants was not injured, while an occupant of the other was taken to hospital with injuries that were not life threatening.
The driver of the offending vehicle has also been taken to a hospital, though the injuries are not life-threatening.
Painchaud said as soon as his health permits, he will meet with an investigator. Illness is a suspected cause, although medical tests will verify this hypothesis.
