The newborn delivered in the hours after her mother was fatally struck by a car in Quebec City last week is in stable condition, according to relatives.

Marie-Pier Gagné was hit by a car last Wednesday as she crossed the street near the Centre hospitalier de l’Université Laval. She was heading to the hospital. Her baby, Alexe, sustained life-threatening injuries and was transferred to the Montreal Children’s Hospital after she was delivered in a Quebec City hospital.

Martin Bittner, who said he is the newborn’s uncle on a Facebook page set up to mourn Gagné, posted an update about Alexe’s condition Saturday. Test results are positive and follow-ups will be necessary, but no operations are planned for now, Bittner wrote in the post.

TV host Chantal Lacroix also posted an update Saturday, after contacting the family to offer support. Lacroix wrote Alexe suffered skull fractures and a concussion on Facebook.

Gagné was 27 years old and 40 weeks pregnant at the time of the crash, according to a Crowdrise online fundraiser launched to help her widower.
