The provincial government will give $100,000 in financial aid to to help First Nations homeless people in Montreal.

The sum will go to Projet Autochtones du Québec, a Montreal-based non-profit organization that serves as a First Nations shelter for the homeless and helps bridge the gap with non-indigenous communities.

Public health minister Lucie Charlebois and native affairs minister Geoffrey Kelley announced the $100,000 endowment aimed to support PAQ’s service to First Nations men and women living on the streets of Montreal.

“We cannot remain insensitive to human suffering. The additional services that will from now on be offered by PAQ will allow First Nations and Inuit peoples living in difficult situations in Montreal to find a welcoming, secure and respectful shelter,” said Kelley.

The announcement is part of a government initiative for 2015-2020 to combat homelessness called Mobilisés et engagés pour prévenir et réduire l’itinérance. The year of its launch, the initiative had already bestowed a $100,000 grant to PAQ as well as a $60,000 for 2015-2016.

PAQ also received a $189,766 grant for 2015-2016 from the provincial government as part of the Programme de soutien aux organismes communautaires.
