Quebec announced Thursday it will inject $553 million in schools across the province.

Education minister Sébastien Proulx announced that the investment would serve to carry out projects that will create additional space in schools throughout the province. It is in response to the increasing student attendance, said the minister’s press attaché Marie Deschamps.

“It’s the first time we invest this much to add space in Quebec,” Deschamps said.

There will be more classes rather than more students per class, she said.

Quebec also announced that $80 million would be put to build three new school infrastructures in the Outaouais region.

Deschamps could not say how much funding would go to schools in the Montreal region but said more announcements will come in the coming days, weeks and months.

The financial investment is part of a 10-year initiative to build new schools, create more space and refurbish existing buildings. Schools for students who are physically challenged or have general learning disabilities will also benefit from it. The new investment will be added to the $1.058 billion already devoted to maintenance of the schools.
