QUÉBEC — The funeral of Marie-Pier Gagné, the young pregnant woman who was killed after being struck by a car in Quebec City, was held Sunday afternoon.
Family and friends of Gagné, who was 27, gathered at a funeral home in Ste-Marie-de-Beauce.
The St-Lambert-de-Lauzon native was 27 years old and 40 weeks pregnant at the time of the crash, according to a Crowdrise online fundraiser launched to help Gagné’s widower, now facing a life as a single parent.
Doctors were able to save her baby, who suffered a fractured skull and a concussion but is now in stable condition.
A police investigation into the accident has yet to reveal what led the driver to hit Gagné; police suspect the driver may have been ill.
The victim’s cousin, Émilie Marceau, started a Facebook page to honour her memory and direct donors to the website.
The story struck a chord with many who have left condolences on Facebook. More than $55,000 was raised in the span of a few days to help the father of Gagné’s child.
The family, who asked media to be discreet during the service, plans to publicly thank the population for its support.
