Ten marchers began the Grande Traversée d’Anticosti on the weekend, a 115-kilometre journey across the island organized by Nature Québec.
The walk is meant to draw attention to the island and its inhabitants for reasons other than exploiting oil and gas, Nature Québec said.
According to the environmental organization, there is certainly “more to do” on the island than develop oil and gas projects that “are a risk to the biodiversity and environment.”
Nature Québec says no drilling should take place on Anticosti and the government should put an end to the quest for oil. The organization says it must accompany the community and support initiatives in search of a real sustainable socio-economic development.
The walkers were welcomed by the mayor of Anticosti, John Pineault. They will cross the island on foot from south to north, from the mouth of the Jupiter River to Vauréal River – a 10-day feat.
