Québec solidaire wants to all plastic bans banned throughout the province of Quebec.
The party launched a petition on the National Assembly’s website in the hopes to see the government ban single-use plastic bags.
MNA Manon Massé, who created the petition, said she decided to back this initiative based on demands from citizens.
She said the transition to a more ecological lifestyle is often achieved by changing one’s habits and that banning plastic bags is a gesture that can be done every day to help reduce the quantity of products found in dump sites.
While other parties were not asked about the idea, the Ste-Marie–St-Jacques representative said nearly half of Quebec’s population would be forced to use alternatives to one-use plastic bags as of Jan. 1, 2018 once 82 cities within the Greater Montreal adopt the bylaw — once in place, it may be easier to apply the rule to the remainder of the province.
The petition deadline was set to Nov. 29.
