Dawson College is holding a special ceremony Tuesday morning to mark the 10th anniversary of the fatal mass shooting there and to remember the victims.

Eighteen-year-old Anastasia De Sousa was killed, and 16 other students and employees of the downtown CEGEP were wounded by a gunman who opened fire in the cafeteria on Sept. 13, 2006, around 12:40 p.m.

The commemoration will be held in the Peace Garden, which was created five years after the shooting, and will feature speeches by Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre, Quebec higher education minister Hélène David and aboriginal leader Ghislain Picard, as well as several past and present Dawson students.

Also in attendance will be some of the survivors of the shooting, police officers and ambulance technicians who rushed to the CEGEP that day, as well as De Sousa’s family.

Anastasia, for whom one of the three interlocking gardens was named, would have been 28 today. Since the shooting, the Quebec government has passed Bill 9 – dubbed Anastasia’s Law – which among other things prohibits guns in schools and on public transit, and limits ownership of semi-automatic weapons to members of gun clubs.
