While you were sleeping: Canadian freed from Chinese jail, delicate Syrian ceasefire holds

Kevin Garratt, a Canadian detained in China for two years, has made it home. Garratt arrived in Vancouver Thursday after being charged with spying. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had the raised the issue of Garratt’s detention during his trip to China earlier this month. Garratt was released on bail.

A delicate ceasefire in Syria appears to be holding. The ceasefire, brokered by the United States and Russia, is in its third day. According to The New York Times, the Syrian government is blocking humanitarian aid from the United Nations from getting to its intended destination. The UN is calling this a violation of the agreement.

Someone appears intent on sending a message to people tied to the Montreal Mafia as firefighters had to deal with yet another arson fire at a company with past ties to the Rizzuto organization.

A Montreal police spokesperson said someone tried to set fire to a food distribution company on Magloire St. in St-Léonard but that a sprinkler system inside contained the flames before any major damage was done. The investigation has been turned over to the Montreal police arson squad.

A man suspected of illegal tobacco trafficking was gunned down Thursday night in Ste-Thérèse, northwest of Montreal.

No arrest has been made.

The incident took place around 9 p.m. outside the home of the victim, a man in his 40s, who was hit by several bullets. Soon after, a burning vehicle was found in Ste-Adèle, 60 kilometres north of Ste-Thérèse.
