A 47-year-old man has died Saturday after falling into the Cheval blanc rapids in Pierrefonds during a boating race.

Two kayakers fell into the rapids Friday afternoon after their kayaks slammed into a buoy during a fundraising race, a Montreal Fire Department spokesperson said.

The 47-year-old man suffered a heart attack en route to a hospital, an Urgences Santé official said.

He has been identified as Jean Langevin, the director general of the city of Bromont.

The accident occurred around 2:30 p.m. in the rapids that are part of the Riviére-des-Prairies. One of the kayakers was able to cling to the buoy, while Langevin got swept under because of the strong current, Fire Department spokesperson Michel Girard said.

The race was the third edition of the Circuit bleu Charles-Bruneau, a fundraiser for the Charles-Bruneau foundation.
