The union representing daycare workers in Montreal and Laval held a protest Saturday against government cuts in daycares.

The Quebec government, which cut $74 million in 2014, is expected to slash another $46 million next year — bringing the grand total to $120 million.

Nathalie Fontaine, interim president of the union group STCPEML, said the cuts will have a direct impact on the quality of services offered to children.

She said she already noticed the quality of special services — like those of speech pathologists — deteriorate.

She also said the quality of food given to children and of educational materials is decreasing.

In an interview with the Presse Canadienne, Nathalie Fontaine said “parents are paying more for fewer services. This money isn’t being reinvested in CPEs, so we have to ask the government where it reinvested this money.”

The STCPEML represents approximately 160 early childhood education centres and 3,000 workers.
