Arson squad to visit site of major fire once flames are doused

The fire department was on the scene and roads remain closed Friday around the scene of a fire that broke out late Thursday morning.

Viger St. was closed between St-Urbain and de Buillion Sts. St-Laurent remained closed between St-Antoine St. and René-Lévesque Blvd.

The abandoned heritage building known as Édifice Robillard, which was home to the first cinema in Canada back in 1896, caught fire shortly after 11 a.m. and was collapsing on itself by 1 p.m.

More than 125 firefighters were called to the scene near the Chinatown entrance on St-Laurent Blvd., just north of Viger Ave. No injuries were reported.

The fire significantly damaged a neighbouring building and Montreal police confirmed that arson investigators will be on site as soon as firefighters give the all-clear.
