Montreal blue-collar union president Chantal Racette is expected to face a non-confidence vote at a union meeting on Saturday.
Local 301 of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, representing about 5,000 city blue-collar workers, held a general assembly at a church in Rosemont–La Petite-Patrie that began at 9 a.m. and was continuing into the afternoon.
Racette, who was elected president of the union in April 2015, is reportedly facing a backlash after a Journal de Montréal report two weeks ago revealed she had ordered GPS devices to be secretly installed on the cars of certain members of her executive on Nov. 18 to allow her to track their movements.
The newspaper reported on Saturday that some rank-and-file members are expected to call a non-confidence vote in a bid to have her removed as head of the union.
Montreal police officers were seen standing outside the church on Saturday as the meeting carried on inside.
