A couple is facing criminal charges after their eight-week-old baby was found dead inside their St-Jérôme apartment.
Sandra Laverdure, 30, and Mathieu Charles Mongrain, 27, appeared in court Thursday for their arraignment. Laverdure is accused of criminal negligence causing death, involuntary homicide and failure to provide necessaries of life. Mongrain was charged with failure to provide necessaries of life.
Though the incident occurred in May, Crown prosecutors only recently moved forward with charges after a lengthy police investigation. The Sûreté du Québec would not provide details about who found the child and what is alleged to have been the cause of death.
However, a report by the Journal de Montréal claims that a toxicology report found traces of methamphetamine in the infant’s blood. The report, which quotes police sources, claims it’s possible the drugs were transmitted to the child through her mother’s breast milk.
A bail hearing is set for Friday.
