A 50-year-old man was hit and killed by a dump truck used for carrying snow early Monday in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce.

The incident occurred about 12:30 a.m. when the man was walking across Sherbrooke St. W. at Girouard Ave. The truck, which was empty at the time, was heading west and turned left onto Girouard when it struck the pedestrian.

Emergency responders transported the pedestrian to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Police investigators were at the scene throughout the night to try to reconstruct the accident. Sherbrooke was reopened about 6 a.m.

In the wake of the accident, Montreal executive committee member Anie Samson, who is in charge of public security, warned pedestrians they have to ensure they are seen by heavy trucks. She also warned motorists to adapt their driving habits to winter conditions.

The accident came 11 years to the day that a snow removal truck struck and killed Jessica Holman-Price in Westmount. Her death sparked public outcries for trucks to be outfitted with protective skirts to prevent pedestrians from falling into their wheelbases.

Samson said all city of Montreal trucks have the skirts, but that isn’t the case for the private sector.
