Police called to Ste. Anne’s Hospital to deal with knife-wielding patient

A 53-year-old male outpatient at Ste. Anne’s Hospital, has been charged with assault with a weapon after uttering death threats while being treated at the Ste. Anne de Bellevue veterans’ hospital. The incident took place April 11.

Police were called at about 9:45 a.m. that day when staff became worried that the man, who was making threats connected to a former employer, would hurt himself or someone else.

Only after police arrived on the scene did the man pull out a knife that he had concealed and, begin to brandish it. No one was injured, however. Officers managed to subdue the man before anyone was hurt.

Montreal police community relations officer Jean-Pierre Lévis at Station 1 said the man was later transported to a St. Jean sur Richelieu hospital for a psychological assessment.

The man, a resident of Chambly, has been charged with assault with a weapon.

Ste. Anne’s Hospital is Canada’s last federally-funded hospital for veterans. The Ste. Anne Operational Stress Injury Clinic, one of the hospital’s outpatient clinics is a leader in treatment of postraumatic stress disorder.
