A 72-year-old woman is fighting for her life after an early morning apartment fire in the St-Laurent borough of Montreal.
The woman, who lived alone in a basement apartment on Keller Blvd., received first- and second-degree burns to 40 per cent of her body, said Martin Guilbault, an operations chief with the Montreal fire department.
The cause of the fire, which began on a couch in the living room around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, is suspected to be from a cigarette.
It took firefighters about 20 to 25 minutes to put out the fire, which caused about $20,000 in damage. Even though it was a small fire, there was a lot of smoke, Guilbault said.
He added that the investigation has been turned over to the Montreal police because of the extent of the woman’s injuries.
