Quebecers think Donald Trump’s presidency will be a disaster, both for the United States and the rest of the world, says a poll by Léger Marketing for the Journal de Montréal and Le Devoir.
Most Quebecers have a poor opinion of the newly sworn-in US president, considering him racist (76 per cent of respondents), misogynist (70 per cent), dishonest (80 per cent) and not frank (62 per cent).
A majority of Quebecers also believe Trump’s presidency will increase racial tension (69 per cent), street protests (68 per cent), conflicts between the U.S. and other countries (66 per cent) and the gap between rich and poor (59 per cent).
While the new president declared in his inaugural speech that he would eradicate “radical Islamic terrorism everywhere,” 88 per cent of Quebecers believe that there would be at least as many terrorist attacks under his presidency, with 45 per cent saying terrorist attacks will increase and 43 per cent saying there will be as many.

However, while Trump is extremely unpopular in the province, some of his ideas have traction with Quebecers, according to Léger, such as his populism, rejection of the “elite” and cynicism toward electoral politics.
The poll also showed Quebecers are concerned about the economic impact of Trump’s presidency, with 69 per cent saying trade relations between the U.S. and Canada will deteriorate.
The poll surveyed 1,005 adults across Quebec by internet questionnaire from Tuesday to Thursday.
The pollster said that sample size would have a margin of error within 3.1 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
