Some commuters are wondering why buses aren’t using what appears to be a reserved bus lane on the side of Highway 40 between St. Charles Blvd. and Cavendish Blvd.
Work was done to fortify what appeared to be a reserved lane this summer, but buses are still not using it to bypass traffic jams.
“It is not a reserved bus lane,” Societé de transport de Montréal spokesman Amélie Régis said. “It is the shoulder of the road. There is a distinction.”
Because it is a shoulder and not a lane, bus drivers must be trained how to safely navigate what is essentially the sloped, edge of the road.
Training will be completed early in the new year and information panels will be installed along the route, after which bus drivers will be allowed to bypass sluggish traffic.
