QUEBEC — Tens of thousands of festival-goers are expected at a night-time parade through the Lower Town for Quebec City’s winter carnival on Saturday.
In the wake of the recent tragedy at the the city’s grand mosque, the Quebec City police force issued a statement to reassure the public that security measures are in place, and people should attend carnival activities as usual.
The parade is set to begin at 7 p.m., and will follow a four-kilometre route through the streets of Charlesbourg.
The parade, on the theme of northernness, will include about a dozen floats, banners, brass bands and various other forms of live entertainment.
The second parade will take place next Sunday, Feb. 11, in the Upper Town.
Premier Philippe Couillard and Quebec City Mayor Régis Labeaume said this week the carnival, which opened Jan. 27 and runs until Feb. 12, must go ahead despite last Sunday’s mosque attack, in which six men were killed and 19 injured.
