Montreal police said Thursday they have arrested a suspect in connection with vandalism committed Feb. 2 on a Montreal mosque.
The 48-year-old man was arrested at about 7 p.m. Wednesday after police answered a family violence call and, seeing the suspect resembled the images captured by the mosque’s surveillance cameras, took him into custody.
The suspect was questioned by the Montreal police hate crimes unit and is expected to be arraigned on Friday on charges in connection with the vandalism
He was charged Thursday afternoon with assault in connection with the family violence complaint.
The arrest comes after the Khadijah Masjid Islamic Centre on Centre St. in Pointe-St-Charles had its window broken and an egg hurled at it at about 7:20 a.m. on Feb. 2.
Police later released images taken by the mosque’s surveillance camera.
Investigators involved in the case are suggesting the suspect be charged with mischief against a religious property, an offence that has a maximum sentence of 10 years.
