A father carrying hay in his vehicle fatally ran over his four-year-old daughter, the Sûreté du Québec said Sunday.
The incident happened about 1:15 p.m. as the man was working on his residence in St-Boniface, near Shawinigan in the Mauricie region. He left his vehicle to separate his two children who were bickering.
When he went back inside his truck, he reversed and couldn’t avoid hitting his daughter, police said. The man called 911, but because they were taking too long to arrive, he decided to bring his daughter to a hospital himself.
He crossed paths with the ambulance along the way, and paramedics took over care of the daughter. She was brought to the hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
The father, who suffered severe shock, was hospitalized, according to SQ sergeant Ronald McInnis.
