SYDNEY, Australia – Quebecer Mélina Roberge, one of three people accused of trafficking a large amount of cocaine in Australia, will remain in detention until her trial scheduled to begin on Aug. 28.

A Sydney court clerk told La Presse canadienne Wednesday night that Roberge’s defence had abandoned its request for parole, which was due to be presented on Thursday.

The defence could legally decide to make a second request for parole by the time the trial is held, but there is no indication at this time that this will be the case.

The 23-year-old woman from Granby was arrested last August in Sydney on a cruise ship, along with a man and another Quebecer, Isabelle Lagacé, with whom she shared her cabin.

Lagacé, 28, pleaded guilty in December. She is due in court for her sentencing on June 30, and remains in detention in the meantime. Her request for bail had been denied.
