If you didn’t watch the Oscars Sunday night, you probably knew Monday morning that something went horribly wrong in the presentation of the award for Best Picture.
Newspapers across the globe were carrying the story of the wrong movie’s name being read out by presenters Faye Dunaway and Warren Beatty, apparently because they were handed the wrong envelope.
The mistake resulted in La La Land being called as winner of the coveted Best Movie Award, when in fact, the movie Moonlight won. It was only after the cast and crew of La La Land gathered on stage and three acceptance speeches were made, that the mistake was corrected. An official appeared to be checking the envelope read by presenters while the speeches were being made.
Pricewaterhouse Coopers, the accountancy firm that has overseen the counting of the Oscars ballots for 83 years, apologized for the flub, in which Beatty and Dunaway were given the envelope for Best Actress, rather than Best Picture. The inside of the envelope read: “Emma Stone — La La Land.”
The mistake was carried widely on the front pages of major U.S. papers, and they each had different takes on the story.
