Quebec will invest $4.5 million in long-term care in the Mauricie–Centre-du-Québec region, Health Minister Gaétan Barrette and Julie Boulet, minister responsible for the Mauricie region, announced Monday.
This investment will create 58 new spots for those waiting for accommodation, rehabilitation and convalescence care, and will fund mental health care in the region’s centres d’hébergement et de soins de longue durée (CHSLD) — facilities for those requiring constant care and medical attention.
The funding is part of $100 million announced in December aimed at relieving emergency rooms and reducing wait times for Quebec healthcare.

“By offering faster access to these types of services, not only are we giving a precise response to the needs of the population, particularly to the elderly, but we are also optimizing the use of hospital beds,” said Barrette in a statement.
“These beds will now be used for those in need of acute care, not those requiring long-term or continual care.”
