Two observant and quick-thinking Pointe-Claire residents were given a commendation from Station 5 Commander Mohamed Bouhdid on July 3 for their role in returning a patient who had wandered off in the dead of winter from the Lakeshore General Hospital.
Mélanie Gibeault and her boyfriend Ryan Bedic were driving along Somervale Gardens Ave. in Pointe-Claire during the evening of Jan. 2. when they noticed a woman walking in bare feet and wearing a hospital gown. The night was frigid.
Earlier that evening, the couple had noticed a number of police cruisers driving slowly up and down the neighbourhood streets.
They connected the dots, stopped the car, helped the woman into the back seat and covered her legs with a blanket. They then set off for the hospital.
They crossed paths with a police cruiser along the way, alerted the officers to the situation and were escorted to the emergency.
The woman was treated for hypothermia and frostbite to her legs and toes.
