Dorval is suing the local McDonald’s restaurant outlet, claiming that it damaged the sanitary sewers with discarded grease.
Just over two years ago, municipal inspectors discovered sewage lines near the McDonald’s restaurant on the Highway 20 service road just east of Fénelon Blvd. were blocked by accumulated grease.
The city then hired a contractor, Veolia Environnement, to mitigate damage to the sewer pipes, which were backed up.
The city claims that the damage was a result of the restaurant’s inadequate drainage system and the grease derived from its operations, state documents recently filed in Quebec Superior Court.
The city opted to take court action after the restaurant either refused or neglected to pay a $14,185 bill to cover the cost of cleaning up the grease and unblocking the pipes in question. The city is seeking reimbursement of that amount plus interest, as well as legal cost.
The lawsuit is headed to court Friday.
Dorval had launched a similar lawsuit against Portovino Ristorante, located along the Highway 40 service road, last year.
Mayor Edgar Rouleau confirmed this case has since been settled out of court.
He said the eatery has agreed to pay cleanup cost of the municipal sewage system and will also verify its equipment that is used to retain grease residue is working properly.
