The city of Montreal has announced it will officially be participating in Earth Hour 2016.
As a symbolic gesture to fight climate change, the city will turn off the lights at different municipal buildings and governmental offices, including city hall, between 8:30 and 9:30 p.m. on Saturday. The cross on Mount Royal will also go dark.
“In the spirit of global collaboration, it is essential that everyone contributes locally to adopt and promote good behaviours,” Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre said in a statement. “That is why I invite the citizens, businesses, industries and Montreal institutions to participate in large numbers.”
Earth Hour started in Australia in 2007, and is now celebrated in more than 170 countries.
