A man in his 40s was arrested Friday after allegedly abducting a child from a Rivière-des-Prairies apartment.
Police say the man forced his way into an apartment on Rodolphe Forget Blvd. at around 12:20 p.m., forcefully took a young child from his mother and brought the child into a neighbouring apartment. The suspect released the child just after police arrived at the apartment complex, but he barricaded himself alone in the apartment for about 90 minutes.
Finally, after negotiating the terms of his surrender, the man turned himself in. He was brought to a nearby command centre where detectives interrogated him.
Though authorities describe the situation as an episode of domestic violence, they would not confirm the relationship between the suspect, the child and the mother. Police say he’ll likely face forceful entry, assault and conjugal violence charges when he appears before a judge Saturday in Montreal.
During the brief standoff, police sealed off a section of Rodolphe Forget north of Maurice Duplessis Blvd.
