The Projet Montréal opposition accused Mayor Denis Coderre of inertia after Montreal’s unemployment rate stood at 10.7 per cent in April, just down from 11 per cent in March.

“Denis Coderre was supposed to take charge of economic development in Montreal, but the way he turns his back on all our proposals suggests he doesn’t care about this issue,” Projet leader Luc Ferrandez said in a statement Saturday.

The opposition party said the city has ignored its suggestions for stimulating the local economy like creating a “cluster” of electric transportation projects, setting up a registry for commercial leases, revising commercial taxes, creating business incubators and finding uses for sewer sludge.

During the election campaign, Coderre said he would be satisfied with an unemployment rate of 7 per cent, the party noted.

It added that the Canadian Federation for Independent Business has singled out Montreal for two years’ running as the “worst city for entrepreneurship”.
