Thirty people were driven from their homes in the southwest of Montreal Monday morning when a fire ravaged their apartment building.

The fire at Brisset St. near Caron St. began around 4 a.m. in a building made up of 14 homes. The cause of the blaze is not known.

By 6 a.m., the firefighters had not gotten the fire under control. However, there were no injuries.

Evacuees were waiting in a bus, waiting to find out the fate of their homes.

In Châteauguay, five employees of a plastic packaging company were surprised by a fire that broke out in the night. The fire started for an unknown reason around 1 a.m. in the warehouse of Emballages Salerno Canada on Ford Blvd. in the industrial area of the city. It then spread to the adjacent factory, where plastic items are manufactured.

The five employees were transported to a hospital, but are expected to survive. In total, 20 employees were on site. They attempted to extinguish the fire with a garden hose, but firefighters arrived to get the blaze under control.

In Sainte-Sophie, a machine shop offering a towing service was destroyed by fire late Sunday night. Towing S. Mayer is on Sainte-Sophie Blvd. in the small town near Sainte-Jérôme. The shop was closed and no one was on site when the fire erupted, but the building appears to be a complete loss. The cause of the fire has not been determined, and the Sûreté du Québec will inspect the wreckage later Monday.
