Montreal police and firefighters have recovered a body spotted in the St-Lawrence River Saturday morning in the east of Montreal, but do not know if it is the same man who went missing near the Port of Montreal on Tuesday.

Boaters discovered the body floating near 36th Ave. along Notre-Dame St. E. before 9 a.m.

Police have not identified the man, who was brought to shore after 10 a.m., according to André Leclerc, spokesperson for the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal.

Jean-François Geoffrion, 31, is believed to be the man involved in a boating accident Tuesday evening near the port. He is presumed to have been aboard a boat that collided with a container ship. On Wednesday, family members wrote on Facebook and told local media they believe the man is Geoffrion from Contrecoeur, who went missing.

On Saturday, Montreal police continued to search the surface of the river and shoreline, but underwater searches conducted until Friday evening were unsuccessful.

The strength of the current made searching the river difficult for divers with Montreal police and Sûreté du Québec. SQ used a sonar.

Small pieces of the boat, along with a life vest, were found shortly before the initial search was called off due to darkness at about 1 a.m. Wednesday morning, said Montreal fire chief John Primiani.

On Wednesday, a search of the area, which extends to Varennes, began by firefighters, Montreal police, the Canadian Coast Guard and a Sûreté du Québec helicopter.
