The jury in Richard Henry Bain’s murder trial will continue deliberating on Monday after failing to reach a verdict on Sunday.
Bain, 65, is charged with the first-degree murder of stagehand Denis Blanchette at the Metropolis nightclub, where former Parti Québécois leader Pauline Marois was giving her victory speech following the 2012 Quebec provincial election.
The jury has four different verdicts to consider for the first-degree murder charge Bain faces: not criminally responsible because of a mental disorder, guilty of manslaughter, guilty of second-degree murder or guilty of first-degree murder.
Bain is also charged with the attempted murder of stagehand David Courage, the attempted murder of 12 other stagehands and of Sûreté du Québec police officer Sgt. Stéphane Champagne.
Bain’s defence lawyer, Alan Guttman, has argued that his client was suffering from a psychotic disorder at the time. The Crown argued that Bain’s actions were politically motivated and he intended to kill that night.
The 12 jurors are being sequestered until they reach a verdict.
