A man shot by police in downtown Montreal on Dec. 31 was charged Wednesday with offences related to the gun he was holding that night.
Lindel Darling, 24, was charged with possession of a restricted weapon and pointing a firearm at another person. In addition, he was charged with breaking conditions a judge had imposed on him related to another criminal case. He was under order to not possess or carry weapons and to be at his residence between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.
The shooting happened around 3 a.m. at the corner of de Bullion St. and René-Lévesque Blvd.
In the hours after the Dec. 31 shooting, Quebec’s Bureau des enquêtes indépendantes, the provincial police-oversight agency, said Montreal police were responding to a fight happening outside a bar in the area when they noticed that one of the men involved was carrying a gun.
Police gave chase, the BEI said, and the man eventually turned around and shot at them. Police fired back, with at least one bullet hitting the man.
