BEAUCEVILLE — Authorities in Beauceville have placed the Chaudière River under surveillance as weather conditions could become conducive to flooding.

The ice has thinned because of mild temperatures and upstream water flows, the city’s emergency measures committee said. The committee is making preparations in case of flooding, as significant ice movement and changes in water levels are expected over the weekend.

The 6,500 residents of Beauceville, which is about 90 kilometres south of Quebec City, have been advised to remain on high alert and monitor the situation via the Comité de bassin de la rivière Chaudière website.

Last February, Beauceville was evacuated of 200 residents in the middle of the night because of sudden flooding that originated in Lac-Mégantic.

The Chaudière River runs through the centre of town, as it does in Saint-Georges, Saint-Joseph, Vallée-Jonction and Scott.
