An international Jiu-Jitsu competition — including events with children from ages 9 and up — that was to take place last weekend in Montreal was abruptly called off by organizers after the Montreal police department threatened to arrest participants.
On a Facebook post, the organizers stated that the SPVM informed them that the event was considered a combat sport under Section 83 of the Criminal Code.
Organizers said the event — scheduled for the Centre Pierre-Charbonneau — was to feature Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, which does not use any strikes.
The event has tentatively been rescheduled for March 5 at a different venue.
