Manon Massé, the MNA for Sainte-Marie–Saint-Jacques riding, has announced she’s in the running to become the new female spokesperson for her party, Québec solidaire.

The position with the left-wing sovereignist party became vacant when Françoise David, who helped found it as a progressive voice in provincial politics, gave up her MNA seat in Gouin for health reasons in January.

Massé scored a victory last week when the province announced it was scrapping plans to eliminate her Sainte-Marie–Saint-Jacques riding, which she has held since 2014, in a redrawing of the electoral map for the next Quebec election in 2018.

She has been acting co-spokesperson of the party since David’s departure.

Québec solidaire elects male and female spokespeople to speak for the party.

Massé announced before a crowd of supporters on Sunday that she will run for the position when the party elects its male and female spokespeople on May 21.

The position of male spokesperson has no known candidates as yet. The last spokesperson, Andrés Fontecilla, announced recently he will not run again for the position in May.
