Visitation for legendary swimming coach George Gate takes place at Rideau Memorial Gardens, 4275 Sources Blvd., in Dollard-des-Ormeaux, Wednesday, Aug. 20, from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Gate passed away Sunday, Aug. 17, at age 89.
Gate, who lived most of his life in Pointe-Claire where he trained elite swimmers and instructors, was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame, Canada’s Sports Hall of Fame and Canada’s Aquatic Hall of Fame and was named to the Order of Canada.
In 2011, the new, 10-lane pool at the Pointe-Claire Aquatic Centre was named in his honour.
The City of Pointe-Claire has lowered its flags to half-staff to honour his memory.
A memorial service and wake takes place at the Royal Canadian Legion, 28 Ste-Anne St., in Ste-Anne-de-Bellevue, Thursday, Aug. 21, from 1 to 5 p.m.
